CBD and Weight Loss
With over one-third of American adults now considered “obese” by medical standards, it is no wonder people are looking high and low for effective weight loss solutions. Obesity is linked to many serious and chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes and cancer. This common, but hazardous health condition has the power to reduce one’s life expectancy by decades.
Consumption of excess calories is the primary contributor to the climbing obesity epidemic. Cannabis, and specifically THC, is known for its appetite-stimulating properties, so it seems counterintuitive that the plant could also have the power to aid one in their battle to drop the pounds. However, some recent studies have uncovered shocking correlations between CBD (cannabidiol) and weight loss.
The majority of the current research on cannabis and obesity focuses on THC, or marijuana, and its’ effect on hunger. CBD’s role and potential usefulness in fighting weight gain has been seriously overlooked – until now!
In 2016, a study was published in the journal “Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry” and it looked at CBD’s effect on human fat cells. The study showed that CBD seemed to aid fat cells in burning more energy and storing less fat. At the conclusion of the study, the authors noted that CBD has the promising potential to mitigate obesity.
For those who overeat in response to stress – CBD has proven to be extremely helpful in regards to coping with anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and social anxiety disorder. Because of this, CBD could help greatly in weight control for the portion of the population that normally try to soothe these neuroses with food.
But, what does this mean for people who already have the extra pounds to lose? Can CBD still help?
A man named Marlon Reed began gaining weight in his mid-40s after his career skyrocketed – and with it came massive amounts of daily stress.
He was once a very active man. Marlon was a member of an indoor volleyball league and was an avid jogger. However, with all of the new responsibility and stress, Marlon found himself passing out on his couch every night after work with an unhealthy frozen/processed dinner. Fast-forward 25 years, Marlon is retired, overweight, and struggles with physical activity – even at low amounts. However, for the past six months, he has been exploring CBD oil. He reports that the results have amazed him.
During a phone interview, Marlon stated, “I started to notice a difference after the first month of using CBD oil. I felt less hungry and more relaxed. Just the stress relief alone was enough to make me eat less and sleep better. In the past six months, I’ve lost 31 stubborn pounds that I struggled with for decades.”
There are various different forms of CBD, but CBD oil specifically is what has helped Reed achieve results that many fad diets over the years failed to do. “I wish I had known about CBD oil sooner,” Reed said. Although his experience has not been replicated in existing research, here is what the medical experts have to say.
An internist who practices in Los Angeles, Dr. Allan Frankel, strongly believes in the positive effects CBD oil can have on a variety of ailments/diseases, including obesity. “It protects your brain and your heart, helps you control your weight, and at the same time calms you down. CBD is awesome nutrition.”, Frankel stated in an interview.
Frankel professes that CBD is a vital nutrient, like amino acids and vitamin c. He believes that people become ill or overweight when there is an imbalance of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). Dr. Frankel argues that with the introduction of CBD, the body can get back on track with a decrease in appetite. Using his ideas as a guide, an overweight or obese individual should consider taking CBD oil as a daily supplement.
Another acclaimed physician and CBD expert practicing in California, Dr. Rachna Patel, whole-heartedly agrees with Frankel’s theories. Dr. Patel shared, “I’ve treated patients with CBD who have had almost debilitating pain, excessive tiredness from insomnia, and anxiety that caused things like nervous eating. Once these symptoms are better managed, people are better able to take care of themselves, make healthier food choices, exercise more, and live a better quality of life.”
CBD may facilitate living an overall healthier lifestyle. However, to assume that CBD on its own is an effective method to cure all weight-related issues could be misleading.
While some propose that CBD can help with weight loss by reducing appetite and stress, much more research is needed to confirm this.
Case-studies and peer-reviewed research have identified the effects of CBD when it is used for weight loss; as it shows the potential to lower body weight, reduce body mass index, and achieve a smaller waistline. However, this does not mean one can ignore their diet and solely rely on CBD. Instead, one should simply incorporate CBD to their daily diet regime.
